Maynard’s Café located at Amherst Avenue and the Bay dates back to 1912. It was founded by Billy Maynard, a local lightweight prize fighter. It found greater fame though under the ownership of Al Troiano, who acquired the bar in the mid 1960s. During the course of his ownership and life, Al Troiano epitomized the essence of giving back to the community. Aside from the numerous benefits he held at the bar, he was a major philanthropist to the South Jersey Cancer Fund and to other charities. “He had a very large and giving heart” says his son Steve Troiano. Because of his philanthropy, the City of Margate honored him by naming a street after him. In the late 1990s, he became the first Italian American Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Atlantic City. Maynard’s Cafe remains to this day as a local family watering hole and a lasting legacy of the life of Al Troiano.
